With the recent spate of extremely violent acts in the news video games have once again come under fire from misinformed authoritative parties. They often cite many of the more conclusive studies (a synopsis of which can be found at http://kotaku.com/5976781/25-video-game-violence-studies-summarized ). Today’s rant focuses on these studies in particular as they are, in my opinion, flawed at a fundamental level, many of them lack proper control experiments, instead trying to pass off a second experiment as the control. Let me tell ya something, a control for a violent video game is not a non-violent video game, it’s no video game at all, these researchers should be taking measurements BEFORE, and after both the violent game, and the non-violent game, and then we need to study single player vs cooperative, and competitive multiplayer in both violent and nonviolent games as well, with sample sizes of well over 100 people of different age groups, how are young children affected vs teenagers and adults. Yes, money needs to be thrown at this if a serious study is ever going to be conducted, and a serious study is needed if actionable, constitutional legislation is ever to be drafted. Such as requiring that violent games have clear labeling as such, although the ESRB does a fairly good job of this already, not ALL games are rated by the ESRB.

My primary issue with these studies is that it seems many (in fact most) are allowing the subjects to choose the game that they play, and no baseline (before the game) measurement is taken. Most also don’t mention whether or not the subjects were playing together, and if they were, was it cooperatively, or competitively. Cooperatively ripping apart hapless victims, or competitively putting colored squares together may have the opposite effects as what may be assumed due to the nature of the acts.

It seems likely that humans are naturally more prone to aggression just following competitive experiences, violent or not. That being said, I think it should also be noted that a subject with a predisposition towards violence is far more likely to be attracted to the violent game, and vice versa. Human kind has a dark side, if it didn’t the violent games wouldn’t exist in the first place. The subjects playing the more violent games, if they weren’t doing that, would likely be off torturing innocent creatures like frogs, mice, whatever they could find as an outlet.

Furthermore a predisposition for aggressive and violent acts does not necessarily correspond to a predisposition for violent and aggressive acts towards other humans. These studies need to be constructed more carefully to avoid bias and skewing of the results in order to produce more academically viable statistics.

Regardless of the outcomes of these studies, there is no legislation that could be passed to prevent these games from being made and sold as they are (as they should be) protected by the first amendment the same way as violent movies, rap songs, etc are (and this is supported by the supreme court). Any crusade otherwise is a crusade against the constitution, and a fool’s errand.

To summarize, we need more information, more conclusive, and better conducted studies before attempting to regulate video games, and even then the types of legislation that are possible is (and should be) very limited. Leave parenting to the parents, the teachers, and the like, not the government.

Many are saying that the apocalypse is coming, the end times are upon us, and that the world will end on December 21, 2012. But what does apocalypse mean? According to Wikipedia, “An apocalypse (Ancient Greek: ἀποκάλυψις apocálypsis, from ἀπό and καλύπτω meaning ‘un-covering’), translated literally from Greek refers to a revelation of something hidden, although this sense did not enter English until the 14th century.[1] In religious contexts it is usually a revelation of hidden meaning – hidden from human knowledge in an era dominated by falsehood and misconception.” I believe this to be the true meaning of the word, while it’s certainly been used to describe the end of the world, it is most commonly extended to “the end of the world as we know it, I find this to be weak terminology, it isn’t the end of the world, just a radical changing of opinion on important matters, and in Mayan culture, something very similar is true, the end of that calendar is merely the ending of an age, not when the world will cease to be. As The Huffington Post put it: “Yet it is the Mexica, not the Maya, who trafficked in the apocalypse. The Classic Maya had almost no tradition of cataclysmic endings (though they may have picked it up centuries later from groups like perhaps the Mexica). For them, 2012 is just a year when several of their calendars reset, like 2000 for modern calendars.”

If all of that isn’t enough to convince you that the world isn’t ending, what if I told you it already did, almost exactly as it was depicted in the book of revelations, complete with wars, famine, and disease killing off large chunks of the population at a time. Hitler, the white horse, the anti-christ, whatever you may call him, he gained the love of his people, and began his rise to power during the first world war, where he served as a German soldier. Oh wait, I’m skipping a step you say? The Ark of the Covenant hasn’t been found? Well I have heard that it was supposed to pop up during the end times… How about the Ngoma, an ancient drum found in Africa around the 1940s by a missionary scholar. The people who were said to carry it have an ancient jewish bloodline, and while the drum is not nearly old enough to be THE Ark, it is said to be a recreation, as the original has been destroyed and remade many times.

Obviously since I brought up hitler, the world wars would be the second horseman, WWI, as well as WWII have a combined death toll of 10% of the population, which is a good deal short of the 25% prophesied, but I believe still a significant enough amount. These wars included all of the world’s super-powers, and as such encompassed the globe. As with any war, famine was a problem as well, with the global nature of the war, all of the world’s poorer countries were left with very little to eat, while the richer countries were still eating well enough, this is also in-line with the description of the third horseman, who seems to indicate that the price of oil and wine will not falter (meaning the wealthy are less affected by this famine), and the fourth horseman, death. I’m going to blame the holocaust on the fourth horseman, while this does mean that Hitler is both the first, and fourth horseman, it does seem to work. The holocaust affected many millions of the Jewish faith, hold on… Only the Jewish? Well, not only, but predominantly the Jewish. Is this indeed in-line with the fourth Horseman?

Let’s go back to the scripture and find some supporting material for this. ”For all that the Father gives me will come to me, and him that comes to me I will in no way caste out (John 6:37).” This is taken from an article linking this scripture with revelations in a direct manner.

So, those who follow the Christian faith may be spared from the fourth horseman.

There’s also a great deal of disease during this time period, including small pox, malaria, cholera, and typhus, while it is only mentioned in passing in revelations I felt it necessary to point out these diseases, and others have taken a large death toll as well. The fifth and sixth seals can also be explained, I believe the Martyrs are those who lived in Hiroshima, and Nagasaki, while the sixth seal was the atomic bombs. Check out this description of an atomic bomb blast as seen from the ground… They died so that no bomb of such power will ever again be released upon mankind, or at least so that the full breadth of devastation these devices can bring is known to mankind, and their use will be very carefully deliberated.

How about http://www.weirdlyodd.com/top-10-most-powerful-atomic-bombs/ – check out number 6, and keep in mind these keywords from the video Heat pulse, bright light, red, black, boiling, mountains vibrating, fireballs. Then read

“I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.”

So there we have it, my theory that the apocalypse is over, and that December 21, 2012 is just the beginning of a new era of peace and prosperity for mankind, the end of the world as we know it, but not the end of earth, civilization, or any other such thing.

On it’s official release, Tribes: Ascend introduced a new game mode called “Capture and Hold”, in this game mode players of two teams vie to hold as many capture points for as long as possible. In addition to receiving a point every few seconds each point held gives your team specific benefits. The points have base structures such as sensors, turrets, and inventory stations tied to them, and the team that controls the point controls those assets as well. In typical Tribes fashion there is no magic strategy here that will make you the star of the team, that being said, I have recognized three key roles that need to be filled for the greatest chance of success! The first two are obvious, attack and defense. Unlike in other modes though, the defenders are the ones scoring points here, and the attackers are supporting them. The third role is that of interference. A player assuming the role of interference would have the goal of preventing the enemy team from scoring points, rather than capturing points for any specific period of time. An attacker has the goal of capturing a point, and defending it long enough for a defender (typically sporting heavy armor) to arrive. And the defender of course prevents attackers and interference on the enemy team from completing their objective(s).

The ratio of the roles needed on your team varies with map conditions. If your team has all of the points, you only need defenders, conversely if your team has no points, you don’t need defenders at all. In any case, attackers should far out-number interference.

Attackers

As an attacker, it’s your job to take points from the enemy, an attacker would typically sport medium armor, such as a soldier, or raider, but of course any class is capable of it. Medium armor classes are generally more well rounded, giving you the health to withstand a good deal of punishment, but also the mobility to avoid it, and reach your targets. It’s a good idea to communicate closely with defensive minded players on your team, giving them a heads up if it looks like you’re going to be successful in taking a point, or you could take the point, then change your role to that of a defender. The little heads up will also let your interference make a decision on whether to come help you, or focus on other points. You also may want to save points that are particularly hard to defend for last (since it will be unlikely for a capture to last long enough to generate significant points) . Other than that there’s no complicated strategy, just kill people and walk over the glowing point.

Defenders

As a defender, it’s your job to be on the lookout for interference and attackers. a defender would typically be wearing heavier armors (such as brute, or juggernaut) since he won’t be going very far, and they come with extra health and firepower. What I typically do to prevent an interference player from swooping in and tapping the point is I fire a spinfusor shot so that it lands to one side, and knocks him off course. A more typical strategy is to body-block him, which also has the bonus of stopping him so that he can be disposed of. Attackers are easier to handle as their goal dictates that they need to stop there anyway. Since this isn’t a combat tutorial I’m not going to tell you how to go about doing it, but it’s simple, you just kill him. Defenders are the point scorers in Capture and Hold, since you don’t really get many points for capturing a point, if a point is seesawing between both teams it’s not doing either team any good, you need to hold on to it!

Interference

This is the less obvious role, but can be very effective when the chips are down, and your attackers need time to get those points back. Interference would typically be wearing light armor, such as a pathfinder, or infiltrator. Your goal isn’t really to capture the point, just to prevent it from giving the enemy points. As a pathfinder, you’ll zip around the map tagging as many of the enemy points as possible one after the other, you want to move so fast that they can’t really prevent you from doing it, even if it’s easy for them to take it back, they won’t get any points from that CP for a few seconds, and if they didn’t even notice you do it it might take them several seconds to even figure out they need to take it back again (it’s hilarious when “their” turret starts shooting them, and THAT’s their cue to take it back). There are tips for gaining speed on my flag chasing tutorial.

Alternatively, you could go with an infiltrator, and focus on one point rather than zipping around to multiple. The downside to this stealth approach is that you’ll be removed from stealth when you walk over the point, so you need to have a plan for getting out of the area fast. Even a fairly slow ski will allow you to get out since they’ll have no warning of your approach, and you can easily hide again after. At this point you can go after a new point if you think they’re too smart, or just keep taking the same one back, preventing it from generating any points at all.

Whatever your interference strategy, you’ll want to focus on points that are difficult to defend, out in the open, with no obstructions for you to get caught up on, or to focus a defender’s fire. Points that are indoors are fairly difficult to run interference on. Just do what you can to keep the enemy from scoring points, and if it happens to stick, that’s just a bonus.

Just an example of a point attackers should avoid, and interference should shoot for. This bridge’s owner often seesaws between the two teams, it’s wide open, and areas surrounding are conducive to picking up speed. Enemies also like to stand up top while firing on defenders below, it’s just a mess to have to defend, but a prime example of a point you want to keep from generating too many points for the enemy team (since attackers should be keeping it for last, and tend to run interference on points they’re attacking themselves)

The problem is that most flash game portals are not very picky when it comes to choosing the games they post up on their sites, and for every 10 flash games, 9 of them aren’t any fun. Indeed a quick search for flash game plugins for wordpress will give you multitudes of plugins designed to give you tens of thousands of games! Most of these have no method of making money from them either. These types of plugins are mere toys. Bionic Squirrels has undergone a massive redesign due to the intention of supporting flash games. We created a wordpress plugin designed for hand-selecting flash games, and monetizing them. We like to choose games that are innovative, nostalgic, and overall not utter crap. Our mission is to help website owners to monetize, without increasing spam. Higher quality content, and less spam. Bionic Squirrels will produce software to provide a means to that end. We already started by facilitating a user-friendly approach to posting Mochi Media flash games to wordpress blogs that obviates the need for cherry-picking higher quality games, the games are monetized in that publishers receive a percentage of advertising revenue from the games they post, and the plugin enforces google adsense standards for quality by providing a way to easily place ad codes at the recommended distance from the game.
